Counseling Updates

Students and Families,

As we approach the 2022-2023 school year, we are pleased to share with you some important and exciting updates from the Counseling Office.

WELCOME BACK, ALLEN GLUNT!

In order to prioritize even more personalized care for our students, we have added a fifth member to the school counseling team. We are thrilled to welcome Allen Glunt back to Brebeuf Jesuit as both a counselor and as Head Boys Basketball Coach beginning August 1! Allen brings a proven track record of student and family support at Brebeuf Jesuit, and a great passion for that work both on and off the court.

This addition to the Counseling Office means smaller caseloads for counselors, and therefore, additional bandwidth for us to serve our students and focus more heavily on student mental health.

With this change comes the chance that your student may have a new counselor. We understand entirely that your student may have already developed a relationship with their previous counselor - please know that student wellbeing remains at the center of our work, and that the counseling team is working together to ensure each student remains cared for moving forward. In the event of an updated counselor assignment, any information pertinent to your student's continued success will be relayed accordingly to ensure a smooth transition for all.

You may view updated counseling assignments below. Please note:

  • There will be no changes to senior students' assigned counselors.
  • Sophomores and juniors, you will receive a welcome message and an invitation to meet your new School Counselor within the first 8-day rotation of the 2022-2023 school year.

If Mr. Glunt is your student's new counselor and you have questions prior to his August 1 start date, please contact Rayven Ashworth at rashworth@brebeuf.org

FROM ACADEMIC COUNSELING TO SCHOOL COUNSELING

Reflecting on the role the counseling team plays in the lives of students at Brebeuf Jesuit, we recognized a need to clarify the value and roles of our different counselors. Care for the whole person remains at the heart of a Jesuit education, and the title of "Academic Counselor" does not fully encapsulate the Counseling Office's ability and efforts to support Brebeuf Jesuit students both in- and outside life in the classroom.

Therefore, what was previously called the Academic Counseling Office will now be referred to as the School Counseling Office, and Academic Counselors as School Counselors. These changes will not diminish the academic support School Counselors provide, nor will it affect the role of the College Counseling Office. School Counselors and College Counselors work closely to serve the needs of all students at all points of their Brebeuf Jesuit experience. For additional clarification:

YOUR SCHOOL COUNSELOR SUPPORTS YOU WITH

  • Academic planning and support
  • Social-emotional counseling
  • Whole-person development

YOUR COLLEGE COUNSELOR SUPPORTS YOU WITH

  • Self-reflective understanding of your strengths and interests
  • Connecting your talents and interests with college and career exploration
  • Guidance through the college search and application process to find good fits and your "why"

YOUR SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER SUPPORTS YOU WITH

  • Mental health assessment and counseling
  • Referrals to community mental health providers
  • Mental health care coordination and advocacy within the school

We sincerely appreciate your support and cooperation with these exciting changes. Our School Counselors look forward to serving your students, and placing greater emphasis on both one-on-one time with families and individual student support.

Should you have any questions, please contact Rayven Ashworth at rashworth@brebeuf.org or 317.524.7108.
