Phone-Free School Day Policy

As the 2024-25 school year was ending and summer was beginning, Brebeuf Jesuit announced its intention to engage in a process of community-wide input for the discernment of a new personal device policy for the 2025-26 school year. There were strong responses to the surveys of students, parents, faculty, and staff. Brebeuf engaged in live discussions with groups of students at the end of the school year and during summer school, as well as two parent group discussions. The themes from the collected input were analyzed, and we consulted with resources from the fields of education and mental health. Brebeuf is grateful to everyone who took the time to participate and to give input in this process.
As a result of this process, Brebeuf Jesuit has adopted a Phone-Free School Day policy beginning in the 2025-26 school year.
Phone-Free School Day Policy
Student phones must be stored away in students' backpacks, bags, or lockers, throughout the school day from 8:30 a.m. - 3:20 p.m.
Student use of headphones, earbuds, or other listening devices that are connected to laptops (not phones) are allowed only in the following situations during the school day:
- When explicitly allowed at the direction of the teacher during class time.
- In the Information Commons (Library).
- In all other situations, headphones, earbuds, or other listening devices should be stored away from 8:30-3:20.
All faculty and staff members are directed to collect a student’s phone anytime they see it out during the school day, and bring it to the Dean’s Office. This same procedure holds for unauthorized use of listening devices. Repeated violations will result in disciplinary actions per the Student Code of Conduct.
Students who need to use their phones for urgent or emergency reasons may do so in the Dean’s Office or at the Main Lobby Desk, with the permission of the staff member on duty.
