STUDENT ADVOCATE

The Brebeuf Jesuit Student Advocate is a psychiatric social worker with extensive clinical experience treating adolescents and families.  Individual counseling is available for students related to improving coping skills, reinforcing support systems, managing stress, dealing with peer relationships and adjusting to life transitions.  Additionally, a variety of support groups are offered.

The Student Advocate is able to assess for depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, etc., and is available to see students for occasional crises or ongoing support during difficult times.  If it is decided that sessions with an outside counselor would be beneficial, the Student Advocate offers help to families in finding a good match with a community professional.

Parents may refer their son or daughter to the Student Advocate.  Additionally, the Student Advocate is available for phone consultation or in-person meetings with parents related to concerns about their teen. The students’ and families’ right to privacy and discretion is highly respected. Conversations with parents and students remain confidential, unless the student’s safety or the safety of others is an issue, or unless other agreements are reached.

The Student Advocate and the Deans’ Office plan and implement four parent education presentations during the school year (September, November, February, and April).   Known as “Parent Awareness Nights”, these popular programs feature thought-provoking guest speakers and always include time for discussion and a chance for networking with other parents.
