Through the Learning Center, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School provides academic support services for students with a diagnosed learning difference. To be considered for admission to the Learning Center, students need to follow the Brebeuf Jesuit admissions requirements and contact the Director of the Learning Center. Students must send a copy of a recent educational evaluation to the Learning Center for consideration. Generally speaking, students who are admitted to the Learning Center have a language-based learning difference or ADHD and, as a result, struggle in the traditional classroom. Parents who are interested in having their son or daughter considered for admission to the Learning Center should contact the Learning Center in the fall of their student’s eighth grade year.
Students in the Learning Center spend four class periods per week working with one of the Learning Center teachers. They may schedule additional time with their Learning Center teacher during their Personal Responsibility Times (PRTs).
Learning Center students are taught study skills and strategies for many of the courses they take at Brebeuf Jesuit. Organizational skills are an integral part of the program. In addition, heavy concentration is placed on developing written-expression and reading-comprehension skills.
Each Learning Center teacher works with no more than two to three students per class period. As a result of this personalized teaching, an additional fee is charged for Learning Center services. Teachers in the Learning Center have received degrees in English and Education and endorsements in Special Education. In addition, they have attended workshops on topics relevant to working with students with language-based learning differences and are experienced in the teaching of literature, in editing skills, and in appropriate learning techniques.
Students admitted to the Learning Center are expected to meet the curriculum standards required by Brebeuf Jesuit. However, students in the program may defer their foreign language requirement until their sophomore year.
