In keeping with the Jesuit philosophy of helping students become “men and women for others” and developing their potential to be “leaders in service to others,” Brebeuf Jesuit requires students to perform 40 hours of community service during the junior or senior year. This supervised service is done with one agency outside of the school and occurs over the course of one semester. Successful completion of this course is a graduation requirement.
While completing their service, students keep a journal of personal reflections of the project and meet periodically with their Brebeuf Jesuit community service supervisor.
This 1st quarter we have 30 students currently serving at 17 service sites. The sites include clinics, hospitals, schools, youth centers, service centers and homes for the physically and developmentally disabled, retirement facilities, therapeutic riding and youth sports programs, nursing home, and homes for unwed mothers). By the end of the quarter the students will have given more than 900 hours of service to the community.
