Placement Tests

Freshman Placement Tests

Placement tests are offered by Brebeuf Jesuit’s Mathematics, English, World Language and Social Studies Departments to determine the course level best suited for each student.  Students only need to take the placement exam(s) in the area(s) in which they have an existing academic record or interest and would find the entry level course repetitive.  Students not taking the respective exam will be placed in the entry level course.

Mathematics: Algebra Placement Test

Students who have taken at least one full year of algebra and are interested in being considered for Algebra II-Honors or higher should take this exam.  Incoming freshmen who have taken mathematics courses beyond Algebra I (Algebra II, Geometry, etc.) in a middle school setting, may also take a placement test for that particular subject.  Provided they perform well on the exam, a ‘P’ will appear on their Brebeuf transcript, exempting them from the class.  No placement test is needed for Algebra II or Geometry if the course was taken at a high school and accompanied by a transcript.  These students will receive the same grade on their Brebeuf transcript.  Students who have completed Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry may bypass the individual placement exams for these subjects by taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and scoring at least a 760 on the mathematics portion of the exam.  For more information, please contact Layton Elliott, Mathematics Department Chair, 524.7030 or lelliott@brebeuf.org.

English: Honors English Placement Test

Students who are interested in applying for the English Honors program must take a qualifying placement exam, consisting of a written analysis – completed during the test period in April – of designated reading material provided at the time of the exam.  For more information, please contact Chuck Fanara, English Department Chair, 524.7007 or cfanara@brebeuf.org.

World Language: French, Spanish, and Latin Placement Tests

Students who have taken French, Spanish or Latin in middle school and plan to continue studying that same language at Brebeuf Jesuit should take the placement exam to determine possible placement in the level at which they demonstrate proficiency.  For more information, please contact Michelle Martin, World Language Department Chair, 524.7041 or mmartin@brebeuf.org.

Social Studies: Honors World History and Civilization Placement Test

Any student interested in this course must take the placement exam, consisting of one essay question, a multiple choice section on United States History, and a multiple choice section on World History.  The test will help determine the student’s knowledge of, as well as skills and interest in, world history and civilization.  Students enrolled in this course may be required to do a summer assignment.  For more information, please contact Matt Lo, Social Studies Department Chair, 524.7068 or mlo@brebeuf.org.

For general information regarding the placement tests, please contact the Admissions Office, 524.7151 or admissions@brebeuf.org.
