Admissions Policy
Brebeuf Jesuit Admissions Policy

In guiding the school in making admissions selection decisions, the Board of Trustees of Brebeuf Jesuit has adopted the following admissions policy:

Expectation of academic excellence is a hallmark of Brebeuf Jesuit. Strong academic performance and potential are among our most significant admissions criteria. In addition, because Jesuit education focuses on developing the whole person, we look strongly at co-curricular and non-school activities as well as less tangible evidence of an applicant’s qualities. Brebeuf Jesuit searches for individual students who have meaningful potential to become a Brebeuf Jesuit “Graduate-at-Graduation”: one who is open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to justice. In this search, Brebeuf Jesuit looks for the following in its applicants:

  • Intellectual breadth and depth in academics
  • Service experience, such as volunteer work, social service, etc.
  • Religious / spiritual experience, such as church / synagogue involvement or other commitments within formal or informal religious bodies, retreats, etc.
  • Co-curricular experience, such as sports, music, art, speech or drama
  • Positive character traits, including initiative, creativity, originality, commitment, leadership and values

In addition, Brebeuf Jesuit recognizes that a mix of qualified students from varying backgrounds (racial, ethnic, socio-economic and geographic) provides a rich experience of human interaction for all at Brebeuf Jesuit. We give special consideration to applicants who help us achieve such diversity. Brebeuf Jesuit also gives special consideration to applicants who are siblings of current students, offspring or siblings of alumni, or offspring of current faculty, staff and/or Board members.

As a Catholic and Interreligious school, Brebeuf Jesuit gives special consideration to applicants who are a part of the Roman Catholic tradition but also seeks to maintain a religiously diverse student body. “Special consideration” does not mean these applicants are assured admission; rather it reflects that these factors are specifically identified and taken into account in the admissions process.

In determining admission, based on the variety of factors set forth in this policy, Brebeuf Jesuit considers primarily the components of the application, that is, performance in the seventh and eighth grades, other school and non-school activities, personal essays, as well as the entrance exam (upon which prospective students generally score at or above the 60th percentile). The school also considers letters of recommendation that reflect firsthand knowledge of the prospective student.

Responsibility for implementing the admissions policy is vested in the Director of Admissions with continuing policy oversight by the Board of Trustees. The President of Brebeuf Jesuit is the final arbiter of any and all admission decisions.
