A Brebeuf Jesuit Education
Brebeuf Jesuit provides an outstanding college preparatory education in the Jesuit tradition. At Brebeuf, students will find excellent teachers, challenging coursework, and a rigorous curriculum. They will learn in an atmosphere that expects and celebrates academic achievement. They will be well-prepared for the demands of college and beyond.

What makes a Brebeuf Jesuit education distinctive is that it goes beyond these typical qualities of a college preparatory education. A Jesuit education is aimed at the development of the whole person, where students are led to understand their intellectual and other talents as gifts to be developed for the service of others and of God. Students are asked to continually reflect upon their experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom. It is expected that what they have learned will make a real difference in their lives. Topics of all kinds are approached from a global, current perspective, which challenges students to consider how they will commit themselves to the service of others. Upon graduation, their academic work will have played a large part in their development toward a person with the "Grad at Grad” qualities: Open to Growth, Intellectually Competent, Loving, Religious and Committed to Doing Justice.

Skilled and Inspiring Faculty
The quality of our faculty is a key element of what Brebeuf Jesuit offers. Students will find great teachers in every discipline, who hold students to high standards and who practice the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis (care of the person). Our faculty has an average of 14 years of teaching experience. Over 60% have master's degrees. Brebeuf supports and expects the professional development of its faculty; every year, many of our teachers attend and present at workshops and conferences, take high-level classes in their disciplines, and take leadership roles in their professional associations. The student-to-faculty ratio at Brebeuf is 12-to-1, which, along with our unique schedule, allows students to work closely with their teachers both in and out of the classroom.

Rigorous Curriculum
Every student at Brebeuf Jesuit completes a challenging and college-preparatory curriculum. Seventy-seven percent of the Class of 2008 earned the Indiana Academic Honors Diploma. Students also have the opportunity to take the advanced courses that are expected by the most selective colleges and universities. We offer 21 AP courses, a number of Honors-designated courses, and two courses that offer dual credit with Indiana University. In 2009, Brebeuf Jesuit students took 523 AP exams. Forty-six percent of the Class of 2009 received a 3 or better on at least one AP exam during their careers at Brebeuf. And 69 Brebeuf students were designated as AP Scholars by the College Board in 2009.

Unique Schedule with Personal Responsibility Time
The Brebeuf schedule is an important part of how we carry out the Jesuit principles of the education of the whole person and the care of the person. The schedule, in place at Brebeuf for over 35 years, is a "modular modified block” where class times rotate on a five-day cycle. Each day includes periods known as "PRTs” or "Personal Responsibility Time.” One great benefit of the PRT structure is that it gives students the opportunity to do a wide variety of things during the school day such as meet one-on-one with teachers, work independently in the library, play intramural sports, or hold co-curricular club meetings. Another benefit is that it gives students the opportunity to make choices with their time, in preparation for the schedules they will experience in college. Our alumni consistently tell us that they are much better able to manage their time, meet with professors, and organize their workload than many of their college peers. See the Brebeuf Jesuit schedule.

Technology for Learning
In keeping with the Jesuit practice of beginning with the student context in mind, Brebeuf Jesuit is committed to offering the methods and tools to engage the 21st-century learner. Our student-to-computer ratio is nearing 2-to-1. There are five "mobile labs” for student laptop use in the classroom, a computer lab for general use, computers available in the Library, and dedicated labs for science, world language, electronic music and computer applications courses. Every classroom is equipped with an internet-accessible computer and projector, and most have Smartboards. Most teachers have tablet-style laptop computers that serve as modern "chalkboards” and communication tools. We staff a full-time Educational Technology Coordinator who works with teachers and students to find ways to create powerful learning experiences using the resources that technology offers.

Academic Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
Brebeuf Jesuit teaches students that their intellectual talents are not meant to be confined to the classroom. So it is natural that our students are very active and successful in a number of academic teams and competitions. Some of our notable achievements include:

  • Debate
  • Fed Challenge: State champions in 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Chicago district champion and one of four national finalists in 2009.
  • Brain Game
  • White River Academic League
  • Academic Super Bowl
  • Science Olympiad
  • Prelude Awards
  • Scholastic Art & Writing Award
  • Concord Review: Student's U.S. History research essay published in this national journal of high school history scholarship

College Guidance and Placement
Brebeuf Jesuit's staff of four full-time College Advisors work to help students achieve their college aspirations. They meet individually with every student and family beginning in the junior year, to serve as a guide to the process and to help each student discern colleges that are "good fits” for him or her. After-school courses and summer workshops are available for SAT preparation and college essay writing, taught by Brebeuf faculty.

Brebeuf students' scores on the SAT and ACT are consistently among the highest in the state, and above the averages for the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), which is a good measure of Midwestern private college preparatory schools.
